Sarah Qi - Cake & Joe

Sarah is one of the partners of Cake and Joe, the popular mousse cake cafe in the Pennsport neighborhood of South Philly. She grew up in the town of Xinxiang, in the Northern Chinese state of Henan.

Not many people know this, but Northern China is where Chinese dumplings originate. While Shanghai is known for its soup dumplings, and the southern Guangdong province for its wontons, dumplings traditionally originated from Henan, when the Northern Dynasty was in power. Later, the dynasty moved south near Shanghai, and this is where it has been established to this day. For Sarah, dumplings are not just a special event meal, they are an almost-everyday meal.

She came to the US in 2010 to study accounting at Temple University, but with her strong entrepreneurial spirit she did not look forward to a life spent in an office cubicle. In 2020, she and her friend Trista Tang, a baker, opened Cake and Joe.

Her remaining dream, however, has been to introduce Northern Chinese food to Philadelphia. On the Kampar Kitchen platform, she hopes to familiarize people with her culture and the food she eats everyday.
